Peter Velits was born on February 21, 1985 in the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. At age 13 after moving to his current hometown of Puchov, he started to spend more time on bicycles, playing ice hockey for the town's junior team in the winter. Eventually he and his brother Martin became more focused on racing and started traveling to compete.
Peter got 2nd and Martin 4th the end of their first season in the Junior World Cup. They spent most of their career at this time in U23, racing for the South African team Konica Minolta. They raced half the year in Europe and the other in South Africa, thus enjoying a perpetual summer. In those two years Peter claimed a few respectable results, like an overall victory Giro del Capo, and stage wins in Vuelta Navara, GP Tell and Giro delle Regioni. Thereafter, both brothers turned pro with the German team Wiesenhof-Felt. "Another great experience, first little step to real big cycling."
Peter became World Champion U23 in Stuttgart, won GP Fourmies and both brothers switched to Team Milram. Their dream to become a professional bike rider had come true and Peter started twice for Tour de France. After two years in Milram, he joined team HTC Colombia. "Team with the most victories what means even higher motivation to succeed."
