In 2007 he won his first ever time trial, taking the title at the German Nationals. After this there was no stopping him. He went on to win the time trial at the Vuelta a Espana by over a minute and to place fourth in the World Championship Time Trial in Stuttgart.

In 2008 he confirmed his ability in the time trial by winning at Sachsen Tour, Austria, the German National Championships and finally he achieved the highlight of his career winning the World Time Trial Championships.

Bert's 2009 successes include the Dauphiné Libéré and the German National Time Trial Championship.
