Rhodes leads High Road sweep in San Dimas
March 29, 2008
Alex Rhodes won the San Dimas Road Race today after breaking away with her teammate Kim Anderson mid way through the race and making over two minutes on the field. Anderson's advantage over the field today and her second placing in yesterdays time trial earned her the yellow jersey going into the final stage.
Anderson initiated the break after sprinting for the mountain sprint on the fourth lap and opening up a solo gap. Shortly after Rhodes attacked from a smal group on the descent and made it across. The pair worked together for the remainder of the race.
At the end of the seventh lap Mara Abbott attacked and finished the race solo to take third place with Emilia Fahlin taking the bunch sprint for fourth giving High Road a clean sweep of the top four placings.
"It was unexpected," said Rhodes, "but it turned out well so we're happy. It was a really nice course. Lots of rolling hills and a technical descent. Kim was really strong and it's great for her to take the yellow jersey."
"This is actually the first time I'm ever won a yellow jersey," explained Anderson," so it was a fun day for me. The team had a really good race. The five of us have raced a lot together here in California this month, so we're learning more about each other and it's all coming together."
Tomorrow's final stage is a criterium in downtown San Dimas.
