Wiggins defends his World Championship title
Second World Championships Gold in two days for Wiggins
March 28, 2008
Bradley Wiggins blasted to his second gold medal in less than 24 hours at the World Championships on Thursday - as an integral part of the Great Britain’s team pursuit squad.
Track cycling events are normally won or lost by fractions of seconds. But Great Britain’s domination of the final against Denmark was so powerful Wiggins could pump his fist skywards in triumph more than a lap from the finish line.
As if winning a second gold medal in front of his home crowd in Manchester was not enough, Wiggins could also celebrate Britain setting a new world record time. GB clocked 3-56.22, smashing the record set by Australia four years ago in the Olympics.
“I’m very relieved that we’ve won, with the World Championships being here in Manchester we’ve been under a lot of pressure.” Wiggins said.
“Some of the lads have been ill in the last couple of weeks, and I was not feeling great myself, so for a while there wasn’t much chance of a world record.”
“But we came back, my form’s got better and better andI think we can go even faster in the future.”
“Here in Manchester it was a question of putting it together on the day over the distance. It’s a great reward for a lot of hard work.”
Wiggins will now attempt to take a third gold medal on Saturday in the Madison - alongside High Road and GB team-mate Mark Cavendish.
