“Cycling becomes the new golf...”

USA Cycling President Jim Ochowicz of Palo Alto has noticed. So has Frank Scioscia, who has ridden on the Peninsula for three decades.

"It captures the spirit that exists in the valley," said Scioscia, manager of the Webcor women's cycling team.

The Amgen Tour of California could not have found a more fitting site than Palo Alto to launch its weeklong cycling extravaganza today. The 2.1-mile individual time trial ends at Stanford University - just around the corner from the venture capitalists, investment bankers and tech executives who spend their weekends cultivating business relationships on two wheels the way some still do on the golf course.
