GREIPEL CLAIMS FOURTEENTH WIN OF SEASON IN AUSTRIA
July 09, 2010
HTC-Columbia's André Greipel raised his arms in victory for the fourteenth time this season on Friday as he sped to a second bunch sprint win in the Tour of Austria. Already the winner of the opening stage, Greipel was once again the fastest on stage six as he outpowered Germany's Robert Forster at the finish in Laxenburg.
"It was a very tough win for me," Greipel said, "a very long stage, over 230 kilometres and extremely tough because of the very hot weather, and then an extremely difficult finish with a lot of corners in the last kilometre. I only just got the victory, but it was really close. Fortunately [HTC-Columbia teammates] Marcel Sieberg and Leigh Howard gave me a brilliant leadout, and I was able to go for the win."
HTC-Columbia had a lot of work to do during the stage as well, Greipel recognised.
"There were four guys away for most of the day and we had to try and chase them down in 35 degree heat. It wasn't pleasant. [Team-mates] Ramus [Guldhammer] and Gert Dockx kept up a really strong pace at the front and they managed to close the gap just in time for us to go for the win."
Greipel's victory coincided with another win for HTC-Columbia on Friday as Mark Cavendish claimed first place on stage six of the Tour de France.
