An Epic Day for Hincapie
February 21, 2008
Team High Road’s George Hincapie put himself into the early break today in the rain drenched stage from Santa Cruz to the team’s home base of San Luis Obispo. The break of 11 riders faced a solid headwind, rain and undulating roads for almost seven hours whilst Astana set a steady pace behind to protect the race lead. Towards the end of the day the numbers in the break dwindled and with 20km to go Toyota United’s Dominique Rollin escaped solo and Hincapie set chase with the only other remaining member of the break Iker Camano Ortuzar (Saunier Duval-Scott) whilst the large crowd’s in San Luis Obispo watched the big screans in the rain waiting for the bunch to reel in the break. In a huge effort Rollin stayed away and soloed to the line for the win with Hincapie coming in not far behind for second place. “That was probably the coldest race I’ve done in 15 years,” said Hincapie after the race. “It was just really tough and miserable out there for everyone and an impressive ride by Rollins.” Tomorrow, the race heads to Solvang for the Individual Time Trial.
