CIOLEK TAKES OVER YOUNG RIDERS CLASSIFICATION
Team High Road’s Gerald Ciolek took second place today in Stage One of the Tour of California. The stage started in Sausalito and travelled over undulating territory to Santa Rosa where a huge crowd awaited.
George Hincapie was part of the lead-out train setting up Ciolek for the sprint but was involved in a crash going under the tunnel within the final kilometer. He was pretty scraped up at the end but finished without losing time. Ciolek managed to take second place and the lead in the Young Riders classification keeping the jersey within the team.
Tomorrow’s stage starts in Santa Rosa travelling through the Sonoma wine country and over one of the most significant climbs in the race as they climb Trinity Road's steep ascent and go down the technical descent before heading into Sacramento for the three finishing circuits. Despite the climb, the race generally finishes in a bunch sprint.
Team High Road's women's team also made the podium in the exciting women's criterium that took place in Santa Rosa before the men came in. After a very aggressive race High Road's youngest rider, Emilia Fahlin from Sweden, took third place in the sprint finish earning her first podium finish for the season.
