Team High Road successfully led Kanstantin Sivtsov to the line in the final stage of Tour de Georgia to take the overall win after moving into the lead with his win in the penultimate stage.

The team took control of the final stage from early on and maintained control for the duration with Greg Henderson coming through for his second stage win of the week and Sivtsov coming across the line safely for retain the yellow jersey.

BRASSTOWN BALD MOUNTAIN, Georgia (AP) -- Belarussian Kanstantin Sivtsov, competing in the United States for the first time, rode to a surprising mountain stage victory on Saturday to become the fourth overall leader in the Tour of Georgia.


Race favorite Leipheimer, who won the mountain stage last year, was third this time around.

 The 25-year-old High Road rider began the day in eighth place, six seconds race leader behind Trent Lowe of Australia.

However, Sivtsov passed Lowe in the steep final half-mile to win the 142.3-kilometer (88.4-mile) Blairsville-to-Brasstown Bald Mountain sixth stage in three hours, 47 minutes, 16 seconds.

Kanstantin Sivtsov was such an unknown at the 2008 Tour de Georgia that the spelling of his name was incorrect in the official media guide. That probably won't happen again after the 25-year-old from Belarus won the overall championship Sunday following the final stage in downtown Atlanta.

Team High Road’s Kanstantin Sivtsov surprised the field today with an amazing ride up the famous Brasstown Bald, winning the Tour of Georgia’s Queen Stage and taking the yellow jersey by less than a second going into the final stage.

Sivtsov quietly made his way into contention, hanging on to Slipstream’s Trent Lowe and race Levi Leipheimer (Asatana) in the final kilometers of the climb when Leipheimer made his move. With one kilometre to go Sivtsov attacked the trio and opened up a significant gap which he held to the line.

Kanstantin Sivtsov of Belarus surprised the race favorites to win the mountainous sixth stage of the Tour de Georgia on Saturday and move into the overall lead.

Team High Road announced today its schedule for the remainder of the 2008 season. 

Race highlights for the coming months will be the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, after which the team will have several team members attending the Olympic Games in Beijing.  Another XX races will feature Team High Road members throughout the remainder of the racing season. 

“We had hoped to support the Vuelta and we continue to have a strong interest in the Spanish market,” said Team High Road owner Bob Stapleton.  “However, in the absence of a commitment from the Vuelta race organiser, Team High Road has respectfully chosen to withdraw its application and we will instead support the Tour of Britain, the Tour of Ireland and the Tour of Missouri – each of which meets the marketing objectives of High Road.

High Road’s Greg Henderson succeeded in going one better today when he took the win in the third stage of Tour de Georgia and moved into the overall tour lead. After taking fifth place in stage one and second place yesterday, Henderson was able to turn the tables and take the top position on the podium and the yellow jersey.

“Well, with Papa Georgio [George Hincapie] leading you out, you’re too scared to fail,” joked Henderson after the race. “I was on his wheel for 30km yesterday and the last 15km today. He’s great because he’s so smooth. He never surges on the uphill and you can trust him to get you into exactly the right position on the circuits.”

High Road’s Kim Kirchen fended off World Champion Paolo Bettini for victory in  stage two of the Tour of the Basque Country. Kirchen stormed ahead in a tough uphill bunch sprint to take his biggest win since the overall of the Tour of Poland in 2006. Overall, Spaniard Alberto Contador still leads.

“We said this morning at the team meeting that this was a good stage for Kim, and that’s how it’s worked out.” said High Road’s sports director at the Tour of the Basque Country, Valerio Piva.

High Road’s Adam Hansen finished second in Holland’s Hel Van Het Mergelland on Saturday, but the result was as good as a win for the Australian. Or maybe even better.

Hansen formed 50 percent of a day-long break, made with team-mate Tony Martin and that culminated with the two finishing nearly seven minutes ahead of the rest of the field.
