USA Cycling President Jim Ochowicz of Palo Alto has noticed. So has Frank Scioscia, who has ridden on the Peninsula for three decades.
"It captures the spirit that exists in the valley," said Scioscia, manager of the Webcor women's cycling team.
The Amgen Tour of California could not have found a more fitting site than Palo Alto to launch its weeklong cycling extravaganza today. The 2.1-mile individual time trial ends at Stanford University - just around the corner from the venture capitalists, investment bankers and tech executives who spend their weekends cultivating business relationships on two wheels the way some still do on the golf course.

SLO resident Bob Stapleton hopes his new cycling team becomes a model for the sport, with a big emphasis on clean competition
By Tad Weber
Professional cycling has been rocked in the past two years by doping scandals that have sent riders packing in disgrace, stripped champions of titles and removed entire teams from competition.
The Tour de France, the world’s premier cycling race, was shocked further last week when organizers disqualified the Astana team from competing this summer because of past doping issues. That knocked out Alberto Contador, who won last year’s race, and American Levi Leipheimer, who took third.
Enter Bob Stapleton. A former telecommunications executive who now lives in San Luis Obispo and bases his Team High Road here, Stapleton seeks nothing less than to make cycling pure again.

It has become a USA-based ProTour team – relocating to San Luis Obispo – and the only team that combines a world-class sister counterpart. Along with the new kit comes a fresh mentality for hard work and fair play. Cyclingnews' Kirsten Robbins was on hand for the enlightening introduction of the forty-two ambassadors for positive and healthy sportsmanship.
Forty-two men and women on Team High Road flew into their new home base, San Luis Obispo, for an early season training camp along the coast of California. According to Director Sportif, Brian Holm, the team split into four groups to work on specific areas of climbing, flat and speed with the addition of specific shorter workouts on the trainer. "It's a new way of training that is much different from the old method I grew up, the old German way of long training," said Holm regarding to the short interval sessions on the trainer.
