Villumsen wins her second National Time Trial Championship
June 26, 2008
High Road's Linda Villumsen has won her second Danish National Time Trial Championship. Villumsen won the event in 2006 but wasn't able to race last year due to an injury at the time of Nationals. She was back on Thursday and beat the next best rider by over two minutes.
"When I first looked at the profile I thought the course would be too easy for me to have an advantage," explained Villumsen. "But it was very windy and never really flat so it became a really good challenge."
"I went really hard at the beginning, even though we had the wind from the back and I knew the way back would be very difficult," she added.
That proved to be the right decision, as Villumsen already had a minute lead at the turnaround. By the finish she had 2'07" on second place Trine Schmidt and another minute and a half on third place.
"I am more than happy to be back in this jersey," said Villumsen. "It's good to prove that I can do well under pressure."
The win also bodes well for Villumsen at the Olympics. Villumsen will ride the road race in Beijing but Denmark does not have a spot for the time trial. There is a chance however that this can changed and she can be granted a last minute wild card entry.
