Abbott sets course record in Sunshine Canyon Hill Climb

May 12, 2008

High Road's Mara Abbott has set a new course record in the Sunshine Canyon Hill Climb. Climbing the 9.14-mile in a time of 49 minutes and 23 second, Abbott beat the previous record by over a minute.

The event, which climbs 3226 feet in elevation and has a maximum grade of 23 percent serves as the first race in a seven race series called the Tour of Colorado.

Conditions at the top were less than favourable with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius and snow at the top, but Abbott enjoyed the event which was held close to her home in Boulder.

"It was exciting to get to go home and do a race on a road that I train on all the time," said Abbott. "Doing well close to home is also special as it's a bit closer to your heart."

Abbott now heads to Oregon to compete in Mt Hood Classic.
