There are surely contenders out there, so let the debate begin, but I put it to you that, right now, there is no British sportsperson performing at a higher level and consistently than Mark Cavendish.

The cyclist also has a splendidly edgy, remorselessly competitive personality and a clear dislike of Tom Boonen, the Belgian playboy superstar, but more of that later, because Cavendish has just won the race of his life.
